According to The Hollywood Reporter, The TLC hit television show, Honey Boo Boo, soundly beat Bill Clinton’s speech at the Democratic National Convention in the ratings.

TLC (The Learning Channel) is bringing us the modern day equivalent of the freak show under the guise of learning of other sub-cultures (check out their new show documenting the life of a two headed girl - I am not making this up).

Honey Boo Boo drew 2.4 million viewers. Yes, 2.4 million viewers and that number represents the lowest viewership for the show thus far.

For those who don’t know Honey Boo Boo, here is a primer. She was a main character in the reality television show Toddlers and Tiaras and was awarded her own spinoff vehicle due to her popularity.

Toddlers and Tiaras follows 5 to 12 year old girls (primarily from poor and uneducated white families in the South) competing in beauty contests.

The girls are pushed by their overbearing and almost always overweight mothers to chug sugar drinks for energy and enthusiasm while performing, dress like cheap hookers (prostatots is the term I believe is used) and awkwardly show-off on a stage at a third rate broken-down hotel with empty seats except for screaming moms and silent poorly dressed beaten-down looking dads.

Honey Boo, along with her white trash family, is now the subject of her own reality show.

As a society we have become like the ancient Roman empire. We are consumed by circuses while the country slowly erodes and eventually falls apart.
