What a finish. For much of the final round it appeared as if Adam Scott would coast to his first major championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes, holding a four-shot lead for much of the day as the rest of the field struggled to gain ground on the Aussie.

He looked like a lock, so much so that tournament officials started to etch his name on the winner’s medal. However, the decision turned out to be a mistake, as Scott dropped four shots over his final four holes and handed the trophy to Ernie Els, who birdied 18 to win by a shot.
